Ahoy Abroad

For the past two years I have taken refuge/vacation just off the coast of Georgia on a small strip of land know as Tybee Island. Laying just outside of Savannah, it was a short enough drive for us to take a vacation and not spend it all in the car. It turns out that vacationing in Tybee is becoming more of the proverbial, “thing to do”. As it is, I like it.

To start a day off right you are going to have to get up a little earlier than you probably intend to while on vacation. But it will be worth it if you don’t have to stand in the line outside of the Breakfast Club. A legendary Tybee staple, the Breakfast Club knows how to do your morning meal up right. If you decide to sleep in a bit you can always wait in the line that wraps around the building until a table clears. I will set the alarm and head straight for the Sausage omelet and home fries. They make their own breakfast sausage and it’s amazing. When you’re paying, don’t forget to toss a little beer money to the cooks as they make a lot of cheerful noise when you do.

Then after some sun, surf, and sand you can roll into Tybee Times Bar. A liberal pouring establishment that’s basically right on the beach, which is nice because you can walk around with your drink in your hand on Tybee. The bar features several frozen concoctions that will fulfill your needs and they will make you whatever you want. Just a few steps from the pier and you can grab a hot dog. Rum and a pier hot dog on the beach is exactly how I want to spend my vacation. Aside from venturing up to Huckapoo’s for a slice or three of fresh pizza.

There is CoCo’s where they too pour a stout drink and make a damn beautiful cheese burger. We usually hit up CoCo’s as soon as we get to the Island and unpack. It’s a tradition for us. The other joint is Sting Ray’s. It’s a seafood place which makes sense seeing as you’re on an island. I’m not a big seafood guy but I make an exception here because it’s fresh and tasty. Plus my buddy insists on eating there two or three times based solely on their shrimp basket.

Tybee has an old charm to it. It is free from the 32 story high rise condos that block out the sky. No fast food joints except for the lone Arby’s. I feel relaxed down there wondering through the countless little shops, and as far as shops go I highly recommend you check out Swizzle and Shake located in the Tybee Oaks shops. They specialize in unique and vintage bar ware which is something I can appreciate. So go to Tybee Island, relax with a drink. Eat a lot of great food and sit on your ass in the sand. After all, it is a vacation.
